Feeling Nervious? Ask about alternitives

Been thinking about Sadation Dentistry for your next visit?

In one study, 90% of the patients who experienced fearfulness about dentistry felt more comfortable with sedation … and you may feel no different.

There are two different types of sedation:

Nitrous oxide, commonly know as laughing gas, is an effective anesthetic with many benefits. This type of sedation dentistry is appropriate for those individuals who are dental phobic, people with a sensitive gag reflex, and people who require surgery, or who require extended and complex treatments.

Oral sedation (pills) are used for many of our  patients who are needle-phobic. Since with oral sedation patients can often undergo treatment for longer at one sitting, multiple procedures can be completed in fewer visits. Like Nitrous oxide, oral sedation is also very safe, but it lasts for several hours after the appointment. You will need an escort home.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry Include:

  • Elimination of fear.
  • Reduction of anxiety.
  • Increased comfort levels.
  • Heightened relaxation.
  • Increased sense of control.

Patient Education starts with you!

Here’s some things that we as dentists see that you can’t…

Why a dental exam every 6 months? A dental examination can detect deterioration in fillings, crowns, and restorations, as well as cracks, plack build up, and the beginnings of infection that you may not even notice until it causes you sever pain, or suddenly have a costly emergancy.

We may spot root cavities (decay on the roots of your teeth) which are exposed to receding gums.

Close inspection can reveal periodontal pockets caused by gum disease, and we may even identify the early warning signs of oral cancer.

We may find decay under the gum line or hidden under existing fillings- two places you just can’t see!

Your teeth may have hairline fractures or signs of enamel erosion.

We can diagnose an impacted wisdom tooth that is ready to make its presence known… although you may not feel it yet.

The onset of gum disease, called gingivitis in its early phase, often goes undetected by patients. We can check for any tell-tale signs so that you can take action to prevent its progression toward periodontal issues.

Your teeth work together to support each other. When one or more teeth are uneven, broken, warn, or missing, changes can occur in your bite. These changes can lead to difficult or painful chewing, jaw pain, ear pain, neck pain, and even migraine headaches. Crowns and bridges are most commonly used to repair teeth, protect them from further damage, and restore a healthy, confident smile.

Here are some explanations of what these items mean and how they affect teeth.

Crown: Crowns restore the size and approximate shape of the original teeth. A crown covers the visible portion of a tooth; usually with porcelain or metal alloys. The original tooth is reshaped to ensure a proper fit between the tooth and crown.

Temporary Bridge: Protects newly reshaped supporting teeth while the new bridge is being made.

Conventional Fixed Bridge: Replacement teeth attached to the crown on either side of the space to be filled. The crowns fit into the supported teeth and are cemented into place.

Maryland Fixed Bridge: In some situations, if teeth on both sides of the teeth are in good condition, a Maryland Bridge is an option. This type of bride attaches to the existing teeth on either side of it, using a metal strip in back.

A dental visit could help you deal with symptoms of stress. People who are under a lot of pressure grind their teeth, bite their cheeks, and neglect their usual oral health routines like home care and dental visits. Research shows that stress weakens your body’s immune system, creating a gateway for an oral bacterial infection that can lead to inflammation of the gums, bleeding gums, and eventually, even to loss of teeth and supporting bone.

There is no single, all-purpose solution to handling tension, but besides booking a dental appointment, here are a few suggestions that could help…

  • Don’t rely on your memory, write it down.
  • Break large tasks into bite size portions.
  • Set priorities in your life.

And of course, Smile!
